If you are a woman and you like messing around with boats then you are sure to own a pair of womens boat shoes.
Even if you do not go anywhere near boats the chances are that you still own a pair. These shoes were designed originally for the boating fraternity as they help prevent slipping on wet surfaces. They are so comfortable that others without any desire to step aboard a boat like to wear them.
Many other shoes and articles of clothing designed for one specific purpose end up being worn by people not at all associated with that particular purpose. As well as these deck shoes there are women wearing riding boots even though they may never have sat astride a horse. Tennis shoes are worn by people with no intention of picking up a racket. Hiking boots may be worn by city dwellers just because they are warm and comfortable in the winter.
With clothing the obvious example are football shirts. Fans not only wear their club’s football shirt but they also insist on displaying the name of a particular player and also the number and position he plays at.
From a very early age all children love to dress up. Fifty years ago it was as cowboys and Indians from the Wild West and later it became the fashion for children to imitate Star Wars characters such as the one whose face we never see.
There are women who wear womens boat shoes as everyday working shoes and as they are so comfortable to wear it is hardly surprising. All of us have favourite footwear and clothing which we wear over and over again and again. If you visit any of the boating towns around the coast of England you can always tell those boat owners from the shoes on their feet. In places like Kingsbridge and Dartmouth in south Devon where a lot of wealthy people have retired and now own boats, it is usual to see the majority of men and women in deck shoes. On wet cold days these shoes are replaced by yellow wellingtons. The wellingtons like the jackets are yellow for safety reasons. If someone falls over board they can more easily be spotted.
Once a year there is a boat race between Oxford and Cambridge University and as usual it takes place this year in the first week of April. The race has been in existence for over one hundred and eighty years with only a few missed during the two world wars. Wearing shorts, shirts and boat shoes the two teams of eight men row the same stretch of the Thames in West London.
The event is taken very seriously and many great Olympic oarsmen have developed out of both sides. There is also a race between women’s teams over the same course and boat shoes are essential because they are light yet tough and crucially prevent slipping.
